How I got angry on a panel because a male writer said the hero's journey could only belong to a man, about story beats in general, why I think the term "hero" shouldn't be gendered, and other thoughts on transformation.

A Guide to Discovering New-To-You Authors

Our topic at the SFF Seven this week is Discovering New-To-You Authors: Where would you direct someone wanting to read more from emerging authors in your subgenre?

I’m going to cheat a bit today and point you to an article I wrote for the SFWA Blog: A Guide for Authors on Recommending Books. I’m not cheating for my usual reasons – too busy, running behind, general laziness – but because I really like this article and I think it’s useful for this topic.

Despite the title, it’s useful for readers, too!

That’s because we can all make an effort to diversify our reading, and this article talks about ways to do that – including resources for finding new-to-us authors who aren’t from the usual walks.

Go forth and find cool new stuff!

A lot more today on fast drafting and the pros and cons of writing so fast that it requires huge amounts of revising time vs. taking more time while drafting so there's less revising time. As always, it depends on what you're trying to do!

The snippet I posted to Facebook is this:

“Will you be needing a lady’s maid, Lady Zephyr,” the page inquired.

“Moranu, no!” Zeph replied, a bit too forcefully—partly because she’d just registered that she and Astar would apparently be sharing a room. And the one bed. Praise the goddess. She hoped, anyway, as she and Astar hadn’t quite finished that conversation. A sneaky and most unfamiliar feeling kept prodding at her that she should release Astar from that vow. While another and far more familiar voice tried to shout it down. Why shouldn’t they enjoy they enjoy each other?

Because it will tear him apart and you know it, the annoying voice replied.

Shush, she told it. He’ll enjoy it and I know that. He’ll be better for sowing some oats before they lock him up to play stud for the High Throne.

Astar isn’t the kind to bed a woman lightly. If you do this, it will change everything for him. Are you willing to take responsibility for that?

Look, voice, she replied. I don’t know where you came from, but you are not welcome in my head.

I’ve always been here. You just don’t ever listen.

“Zephyr?” Astar said her name in a tone that indicated it wasn’t the first time.

She realized she’d been staring at the one—albeit quite large—and enticing bed while she wrestled with the annoying voice in her head. Wonderful. Now she was losing her mind.

Why the hair and makeup thing is such a barrier for me these days, the perils of vanity, and my uneasy relationship with time. Also thoughts on creativity, how reading isn't writing and how we feel in the moment is meaningless.

I'm talking about Guardian (or Goblin): the Lonely and Great God, the fantasy romance K-drama that Kelly Robson turned me onto. Also about good omens, new opportunities, and why I withdrew from World Fantasy Con programming.

You can read up on Guardian (or Goblin): the Lonely and Great God (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5994364/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_3)

This is my WFC statement:

In the interests of transparency and being the best ally I can to marginalized authors, I've decided to withdraw from participation in panels at World Fantasy Con (WFC).

I've been listening to a lot of the conversations about the enduring and systemic problems with WFC programming. I know the con committee put effort into making fixes in the last week, but I've been convinced that in order for there to be real change, from the foundation, that white allies should pull back. Especially given SFWA's very public and committed stance on DEI, I feel can't participate in WFC this year. I'm disappointed because I was looking forward to my panels, but I'm also convinced this is the right thing to do.

Many people understand the issues far better than I do, but I can reiterate what other people have said. That a place to start is that there needs to be:

- a standing accessibility policy

- a standing harassment policy

- a standing programming policy

- an understanding that requirements that volunteers pay for entry will always be harshest on the marginalized voices needed to bring true diversity.

As an author of fantasy and lover of the genre, I really hope that we'll see a World Fantasy Convention in 2021 that we can all be proud to participate in.
