  1. This is a crucial point. In all my office jobs, no one ever talked about money with co-workers. I’d been working for 20 years, before we discussed money and found that a man who had come into our department in a junior position made twice as much as the most senior woman. I finally knew why we weren’t supposed to talk about things. Not because it was bad manners but because it made us complicit in hiding the truth.

    1. Oh wow! That’s such a perfect illustration of how these things work. So much of what we’ve been conditioned to be polite about is what keeps us under control. Don’t speak up. Don’t communicate with each other. Be quiet and biddable. How infuriating that must have been!
