Our bougainvillea, a potted one we bring in for the winter, catching the evening light on its bright pink bracts.

Jeffe Kennedy

Some updates and an honest look at my finances, along with an old story about grad school and how older women do - and don't - help rising ones in their field. This isn't the whoop-ass or passive-aggressive version of First Cup of Coffee that Grace Draven wanted, but I do mention the incident I blogged about last week (http://jeffekennedy.com/setting-the-record-straight/) where someone said I was territorial about SFF. This story gives context for why that accusation bothered me so much.

  1. Jeffe, you’re the most generous author I’ve ever met. You are a genuine person and even though you maybe should pull back, you’ll never stop reaching out a hand because that’s who you are.

This job opportunity sounds exciting! My fingers and toes are crossed for you!!!

  2. I have to admit that it’s discouraging to hear about yet another author who isn’t making ends meet on writer income alone. Particularly one as prolific and successful as you are.

I hope the job prospect goes like you want.

Most of my negative experiences with teachers/bosses have been with men, and the few with women had to do with other issues (at least, as far as I know). It boggles my mind that a woman did that to you. Of course, I can’t understand why any woman would vote for Trump either. The influence of the patriarchy is so strong 🙁

    1. Well, if it helps, I’d be doing well enough to support only myself, or to bring in my half of a two-salary household. And thanks!

So true on the patriarchy – bah!

  3. My English professor the first year of college was the same way, but he was a man. He told us the first day of class that female students would have to work harder. I’d like to think that kind of behavior is at least frowned on in this day and age, but…

Sending good vibes and positive thoughts for the job. But selfishly I’m so happy you won’t stop writing.

You asked us to remind you to stick to the 3000 words a day and not go over since that’s not as helpful as you always think it will be. So I hope that’s the pace you’ve been keeping.

  4. Sounds like a bold new adventure might be on the horizon so I’ll certainly keep my fingers crossed per your request! You’re certainly one of the people I treasure as not only a friend but a mentor so thank you again for all your support and advice – HUGS!
