Anne McCaffrey, Tanith Lee, Patricia McKillip – excellent choices! I have a great deal of shelf space devoted to them – along with Grace, Elizabeth, and you but I grew up with them so they hold a special place in my heart. McCaffrey's books got me to finally love reading in 6th grade.
Very similar timing for me! Dragonsong in 5th grade was my gateway drug to fantasy 🙂
