A Sliver of Something Special

I had a naked incubus in my bedroom. With a frying pan of half-cooked bacon and a hard-on. And a unicorn bite on his ass. Christ, this was turning out to be a weird morning.

~~ A Brush of Darkness, Allison Pang

Allison Pang and I have been friends and critique partners for, wow, over four years now? I know that’s not a huge span of time, but my how it has flown by. I remember when she sent me the first chapter of her A Brush of Darkness draft – and how gracefully she took it when I ripped it apart. The line above was part of the book even then and I remember her hesitating over whether to use it in querying. Oh she absolutely should. She did and now it’s hard to imagine it any other way.

So I’m delighted to host Allison for the release tomorrow of the sequel: A Sliver of Shadow. In honor of the occasion, Allison has arranged for you all to have a chance to win a special gift.

** I forgot to say — the contest runs through midnight eastern time on Wednesday, 2/29. **

I’m going to string balloons and streamers while she tells you about it.

One of the things I’ve always enjoyed about writing is not only putting the words on the page, but also envisioning certain scenes in my head.  What’s even more fun is getting a chance to see someone else’s vision of those same scenes.

Over the past year I’ve had the pleasure of receiving both gifts and commissions from several talented artists who have brought my characters to life in a way I never could, in the form of sketch cards  and trading cards and just lovely pieces of art.

I give away the trading cards on a regular basis, but to celebrate the release of A Sliver of Shadow, I wanted to offer up a custom one-of-a-kind sketch card as a prize to one lucky winner.  The art will be created by Aimo, who has done a number of pieces for me, and who will be collaborating with me on a graphic novel that will go live in the spring. (You can find out more about it over at Sad Sausage Dogs.)

The winner will receive a 2 x 3 inch sketch card, drawn, inked and colored with traditional media by Aimo. The scene can be anything from A Brush of Darkness or A Sliver of Shadow – winner’s choice, as long as it stays within the bounds of Aimo’s requirements (i.e. nothing overly explicit, etc.).

Leave a comment for a chance to win! (If you’d like to share your favorite scene, that would be great too.)

  1. The scene where Abby and TartBarbie introduce themselves to each other comes to mind. 😉

And congrats on the release of yet another book. My pre-ordered copy is somewhere between the UK and here. I hope the mailmen will be fast readers this time and deliver it quickly.

  2. Squee! I can’t wait for tomorrow! And lucky me, my daughter’s still up at college, so when your book gets here, it’ll be mine all mine. :maniacal laugh:

I don’t have one particular scene I loved better than the others. I just loved the book (as did daughter, so you can see why we might fight over the right to first read). =o)

  3. Wow! I’m so excited over the release of A Sliver of Shadow, and the prize is pretty darn awesome. So many brilliant scenes to choose from! Weirdly I would love to see the painting Topher did of Abby though, and I think it leaves a lot to the artists imagination too, who is brilliant btw.
Really can’t wait to sink my teeth into the book 😀

  4. Apparently my first comment didn’t go through so here’s another try 😛 Really looking forward to sinking my teeth into A Sliver of Shadow! As soon as I get paid I’m buying that sucker! On the art side of things, Aimo is truly amazing and whoever wins her artwork is a very lucky person.
The scene I would love to see Aimo depict would be the painting Topher did of Abby. It would look stunning with the style and detail Aimo does 🙂

    1. Hi Koren,

I just had to get online and approve your comments, so I approved them both. But you only get one chance to win. 😀 (I’d love to see that painting, too!)

      1. Thank you! I know I only get one chance to win, and I thought it screwed up, hence why I sent another one 😛 Seem a bit desperate now XD good luck to everyone anyway!

  5. I am so so so so soooooo excited for SoS’s release tomorrow! And for this amazing contest–Aimo is vastly talented. =) I love Allison Pang to pieces, both as a person and as a writer, and I have the perfect scene in my head for a sketch card! At least it’s perfect in my opinion haha

  6. Yahoo! Got myself in a dither last night because I thought its release date was today instead of Tuesday. I’m very much looking forward to this book. I love all the commissioned art and fan art around it. I think the paperbacks should have blank pages so I could paste the art into it.

  7. Aimo and Allison – an unstoppable pair! I can’t wait to get a quiet moment to read this book. I suspect I won’t be getting much sleep this weekend!!!

  8. Hey guys – so glad you stopped by to comment and let me know your fav scenes! 🙂

I took all the people here and plugged them into random.org and the winner is….

    CARIEN!!

Congrats Carien!! What I need now is for you to email me with your info – mailing address, etc and the specific scene you want. (We can go with TartBarbie if you like for sure, but whatever you like.) Once we get that worked out I’ll mesh things out with Aimo. 😀
